  • RE: Wind?

    ol Al....

    I'll pass this on.

Your last comment about wind casting is interesting.  In my course on, CASTING IN HIGH WINDS, I lead by pointing out that there are 3 main phases in the development of a fly caster pertaining to wind.  I.) When he/she can't handle the wind.   II.) When the caster can handle the wind.  III.) When the caster uses wind to advantage.

    Howdy Gordy and Group,
Toms article was Casting under the wind.
Found Larry Pratt article  Loop Spring 2001
    http://www.fedflyfishers.org/Loop/PDF/SPG01.PDF

It made reference to the 13-15 ft above the water. That there was very little difference in wind speed. As pilots know you can have a great change in wind speed at you get higher above the ground, Think jet stream.
What Tom was eluding to was right at the surface of the water or ground. Flat areas that would allow the wind to travel in straight lines.
When we get in River Canyons and high mountain lakes or Tree lined banks we encounter areas of more or less wind effect on our fly lines.
To whit.  If you are casting below a bank that is 6-8 ft high you can get below the wind. If you have a tree that will block the wind you might find the the wind speed in higher below or above or to the sides of the lone tree. So there are times when we can cast or back cast into lesser wind speed. Canyon fishing is one that is the most problem for fly casting. As it changes at every turn of the river. Some times just because it is calm where you are standing does not mean that you do not have wild wind currents just above your head.
So taking all this in you can cast under, besides, over, with or wait for a calm time to make your cast.
Most often it is your loop that keeps the line flowing in the right direction.
I stress that the wind is your friend use it to hid your movements or launch your fly line.
