    Walter & Group...

    [GH] Let's review some other answers without repeating the whole list of question each time.  For those of you who are new to our Group:

    When I send out a quiz, I may get as many as 150 answer messages.  I burn some midnight oil going over each one.  Obviously, I can't send them all.  I pick out a few of the best received on the first day or two and send them along with my comments in text.  After that, I pick out specific answers which illustrate certain points.

    Sometimes answers to a question will be very different from one another.  That does NOT mean they are wrong... often, just different words and different ways of looking at the same thing.

    Read each along with comments and make your own decisions.

    From Frank Harford:

    2 Things a haul can accomplish --1-increase line speed
                                                     2-increase peak load
                                                     3-take out slack
                                                     4-stop the cast abruptly (check haul)
                                                     5 -Share the work between the two hands

    3 Who is given credit for introducing the double hall to competition fly casting ? --------Marvin Hedge

    4 Who taught this technique to him ?------Mooch Abrams

    [GH]  You are the first to come through with the answer to #4.

    21 Briefly tell how how you would teach the double haul to a student who already had a good casting stroke ? -- I start with the Mel Krieger pantomime method with the down -up sequence I augment this with a cut rubber band held in the rod hand at one end and the line hand at the other end . This helps a lot with the up part of the sequence which is the hardest for beginners to grasp . If this is not effective , I use the method taught to me by Dave Leger which he outlines in detail in the Winter 20012  Loop .

    23== When would you use a check haul ?  As part of a tuck cast.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    >From Bob Dionne:
    1. How would you define these things?
         a. Haul.     Pulling with the line hand opposite the rod direction during the power snap.
         b. Single hall.     Pulling with the line hand opposite the rod direction. At the completion of the power snap the line hand remains stationary.
         c. Double haul.    Pulling with the line hand opposite the rod direction. At the completion of the power snap "give the line back" by moving the line hand close to the casting hand.
         d. Check haul.     A quick haul occurring just before the loop unfurls.
    9.  You are making a forward false cast while carrying more than 55 feet of line out of your rod tip, when do you stop your haul ?
     On a single haul, at the end of the power snap. On a double haul, after drift when the line has completely unfurled.
    10. When making a back cast prior to your delivery forward cast when distance casting, at what point do you stop your haul ?
    On a double haul, at the end of drift.
    11. At what point in your long distance delivery cast do you release line from your line hand after making a haul ?
    At the end of drift just prior to shooting line.
    23. When would you use a "check haul"
    To maximize distance.
    [GH]  Bob, then sends a second message. My answers to his questions in his text:
    Gordy,
    Regarding 9. - Please clarify for me: during a double haul is the "giving back" part of the casting stroke considered part of the haul?
    [GH]  Bob, You are using as your end point for the haul, the completion of the "give back" of line, not the completion of the pull with the line hand.
    The "give back" isn't part of a casting stroke, as I see it.  Technically, could be seen a part of a double haul, I suppose.  Joan Wulff teaches it that way.
     Most casters see the haul as the actual pull. They see ,as the end of it, the STOP of the hauling hand. "Giving back" is done in preparation for the next stroke and haul.  No firm "approved" definitions as yet.  We need them to make things clear so we are all speaking the same language.
    Regarding 14. - The pulley that Jim Green developed was referred to on line under "History of Casting" Profile/Jim Green by Chris Korich.
    [GH] I didn't know that.  Thanks for that contribution to my knowledge of fly casting history !!  I looked it up. Let's share:-
    http://www.americancastingassoc.org/cast_masters/chris.html
    "In preparation for the '47 Long Beach National, Jim decided to do some training. He obtained a two foot long piece of pipe, added a cord handle, and had a friend make some brass sleeves which he could slide on the pipe above his grip. Just as a ball player makes his practice swing with a donut weight on his bat, Jim began making his Trout Fly distance casting motion every morning and every evening, adding brass sleeves as his muscles strengthened.
    Along with this special training, Jim knew that if he could somehow speed up his double haul while casting the distance fly, he could make much longer casts. Using a small pulley device in his hand while casting, he achieved the result he was looking for. If he normally could pull three feet of line on a standard haul, with his new invention he could double that amount and hence double his line speed. More line speed, more distance. Jim comments, "I made one mistake. I decided to ask permission of the Tournament Committee before using my pulley invention. That was sure stupid." They threw It out as fast as Jim had brought it in." *
    [GH] Sounds like Jim Green !  He was a consummate innovator and inventor.
    Regarding 22. - I have noticed that many good casters cannot help but double haul on every cast. While fishing that is fine but I'd make the point that casting instructors must be able to easily demonstrate casts without hauls. This is particularly important for beginners as they will inevitably ask "what is your line hand doing".
    [GH] Agree.
    Regarding 16. - Can "power snap", "rotation" and "rod acceleration" be used interchangeably"?
    [GH]  I think so.  Some experts might disagree.  Lefty Kreh terms it as, "Speed-up-and-stop".
    Regarding 23. - Boy do I feel silly with my answer. About 10 years ago I tried to use "triple hauls" to increase distance casts to no avail. While fishing, I use check hauls all the time during Tuck Casts to turn over heavy nymphs, slap down bass bugs and to accentuate curve casts.
    [GH] Never be embarrassed by an answer unless you cannot qualify it as you did here.
    Let's look at the term, "TRIPLE HAUL".  I describe it as:  "A double haul and check haul used for the same cast."
    A couple of etiquette questions. When you send quizzes, how long should we take to reply? Should I reply to just you or to the group?
    [GH]  Reply whenever you can.  Time not important.  I, usually, take a day or two before sending any answers.  Perhaps I should take longer.  Sometimes only a few answer a day after I send the quiz .... then, a few days later, comes an avalanche of answers and comments.
    Reply to me or to the Group.  Once in a while, a member will ask a question which he wants to be kept confidential.  I'll always honer that.  Just say something like, "private message", "Just between us" or something like that.
    THANKS AGAIN for your time and valuable insights.
    Bob
    >From Tim Kempton:
    14. Years ago, the use of a "hauling tool" was outlawed by most competition casting organizations. Can you imagine what this device actually was?
    Sounds like woomera”” spear thrower used by the Australian aborigines
    15. How do you think this "hauling tool" worked to affect a long distance cast?
    Greater rod tip travel distance during the casting stroke
    [GH]  Tim, I tried using this device during my travels in Australia.  Never could do it nearly as well as the aboriginal hunters !
    >From Willy George (Our newest member) :
    13. Your advanced students have asked you to demonstrate forming a tailing loop by means of an ill timed haul.  How would you do that?  I would demo two false casts using good hauls w/ good loops and tell them that on third false cast I will cast a tailing loop.  On that cast I would make an early, sharp haul to cause the rod tip to dip (vs. a smooth haul in the second half of the cast).
    21. BRIEFLY tell us how you would teach the double haul to a student who had already developed a good basic casting stroke.  I would have the student cast sidearm beginning with the line laying in front and executing a single back cast with a haul taking advantage of the water loading.  Then I would have them do a forward cast with a haul (again using water loading).  We would check loop shape and haul timing.  Eventually, the student would keep the forward and back cast aerialized.  With progress they could bring the cast up from sidearm to 45 degrees eventually to vertical.
    22. When do you elect to use a haul when fly fishing with a single handed rod?  Casting beyond my comfortable "carry" distance or in a headwind or tail wind scenario.  Will also use a haul when picking up a heavy or bushy fly off the water.
    24. What is its effect on the loop?  As soon as you use a check haul the loop stops unrolling (vs. continuing to travel through the air)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    From William Ciarro:

    2.  Name at least three things a haul can accomplish.  Distance, drive the wind front or back, accuracy, under bushes, counter flex curve cast, heavy flies, pick line off water,

    17. Do you ever use a haul when picking up line from the water? Yes

    18. Why would you do that?  Sink line or fly needing additional force.

    21. BRIEFLY tell us how you would teach the double haul to a student who had already developed a good basic casting stroke.  I go to the ground.  Break the action into forward and back without having to carry line.  When the student has the timing we go to the air.
