Walter & Group...
[GH] I'm guilty of not getting to read the new March 2013 edition of the loop until Jim Hund reminded me of it this morning.
In this issue, there is a lead article by Soon Lee which directly addresses his concept of the fly line launch. *

>From Jim Hund:
Dr. Gordy:
I think the recent article in the Loop answers my question about line launch. Contrary to my conception, the article posits that line launch occurs earlier (at the stop) which is before the line overtakes the tip.

>From Bruce Richards. Highlighting is mine:
Launch Point (LP). It might be best to get Dr. Soon Lee to explain LP, as far as I know he coined the term and presented information on it in a program last summer at the conclave. As I remember, LP, is a point in time a fraction of a second before RSP1, as Gordy mentioned. It may coincide with the point at which rod butt deceleration starts, I'm not sure, but that would make sense. If I'm correct, LP would mark the beginning of the "stop". That said, I'm not sure how we as instructors would use LP.

>From David Diaz. * is my addition:
Gordy, ironically, you were part to the investigation that determined when the loop forms in November 2007. In fact you were casting the rod that Mack Martin made video of. Some of those video frames are in the Truncated version of Foundation Series Workshop Number 2 that I prepped for you. About a hundred slides were removed to cut the volume to about 25.
The work that you, Scott, Peter, and Mack performed the Fall of 2007 provides the evidence that resolves the question "When does the loop form?" The loop buds when the line overtakes the rod tip. *
All Foundation Series Workshops are available for use by members of the CICP. Their purpose is, as it has always been, to expand the models of casting instructor's experience and thereby improve their teaching.
Thanks, DD
[GH] * David Diaz, Scott Swartz, Peter Lami and Mack Martin all contributed.

[GH] DD,
I remember well ! It was a dark, moonless night at the Atlanta Fly Fishing School, far enough from ambient & street lighting that it was perfect for night video shooting !
Mack Martin's engineering, organizing, video and computer skills were essential to the effort. You organized and presented the course and made it understandable to all.
At the end, we all wondered if a camera with 1000 fps capability would show us anything different and then decided that even if it did, it would be splitting what occurred during a fraction of a second into even smaller divisions. Not of practical value.
Thanks for sharing this. I placed it in an attachment.

>From Guy Manning on "Line Launch":
I have never heard the term outside of this discussion and maybe one other. It is an uncommon term and to me inaccurate for the usage here. Wouldn’t line launch begin the moment the rod starts forward? Loop launch might be more accurate given the discussion, but I don’t want to add to the confusion. :) It seems to be one of those confusing terms trying to work its way into the lexicon.

[GH] Guy,
I honestly don't know who first came up with that term. Both Ally Gowans and Soon Lee embraced it, and either may have come up with it.
Perhaps the term, "loop launch" wasn't used because it began a fraction of a second before the loop began to form ..... one way of looking at it.
On the other hand, someone else may have introduced the term, "line launch" some time ago. Perhaps one of our Group can enlighten me on that issue.
