    Walter & Group...

    >From Ally Gowans:

    Hi Gordy,

    Whilst looking for some material I came across this little rhyme that I wrote some years ago as part of a speech I did to aid a charity for children’s fly fishing:

    A child casts a fly and suddenly we hear a cry, a fish, a fish;
    Eventually the fish is beat and lies there at its captor’s feet;
    Gentle hands hold the prey and a photoflash records the day;
    Then back into the water with silver gleam goes a fish for the future, a fish for the stream;
    A child looks up with a smile and then I know it’s been worthwhile.

    Best regards,
    Ally Gowans

    [GH] Ally,

    Great!

    Your verse brought me a flash-back to a day a few years back when Jim Valle, Lefty Kreh and I gave a public demonstration of fly fishing at a beautiful little pond in New Jersey.  I witnessed a proud father teaching a 4 yr. old boy to release a trout the youngster had caught.  As the fish swam off, the look on the face of that little chap said it all.

    From Carl McNeil:

    Hi Gordy

    Many thanks for the mention of the Itu's Bones project. It was very generous of sprit for Chuck and yourself to make mention of what we've been up to this past year.

    As I've subsequently mentioned to Chuck - we embarked on the project brimming with gusto and opinion. We returned quite humbled and much the richer for the experience.

    The simple act of fly fishing really can make a deep impact on all involved - on many levels that are often not immediately apparent.
    We have seen quite astounding effects on Aitutaki. Not least of which is our friend Itu now employing his two brothers and earning the coin the buy two additional flats skiffs and make a great job of providing for their families (Pacific Island families are "quite substantial")
    And of course, the Bones and Lagoon are in better shape than they would have otherwise been.

    What I find most astounding is that these guys and their very humble Island have shown a huge amount of courage and conviction to make, on that scale, massive change.

    It would be wonderful to see this amount of commitment from much larger countries and corporations.

    Best
    Carl

    [GH] Carl,

    Refreshing to see conservation in action like this.

    Kudos to you!  You teach by example.

    One of the things which make me feel that your efforts are sustainable goes beyond economics.  I saw it in the brief segments of them teaching their children to sport fish and cast.  THAT, I'm convinced, is the best way to ensure the future of their sport ...... and ours.

    [GH]  We'll send some of your answer messages once Mark Surtees returns.  I'll value his critiques.
