    Walter & Group...

    >From Mac Brown (I added the footnote):

Some interesting points thus far Gordy!

I think it is worth discussing what we are attempting to accomplish though for it to make sense when teaching. The amount of fishing casts being numerous vary the abruptness of stop as well as how we accelerate.

By example, the roll cast to 75' has a different type of stop than a puld cast.* One would almost assume it is not that significant after many of the posts. I have a 6 page letter from Jim Green that was written to me in the early 90's which is all about how the hand implements the positive stop.

Also, lets not forget about Al Kyte's work on the stop from the elite casters. Also the work of Bruce and the analyzer. These are a few that come to mind.

I use flicking paint off of a brush when teaching this. There are many others but over the years this gets across and connects with the student the best. I actually give brushes and a bucket of water in large clinics to students.

The great stops actually achieve a reversal often times to the direction of the cast. These are very positive stops and add nitrous to loop speed!

Nice discussion and thanks for keeping the discussions lively.

    All the best,
    mac

    * PULD = Pickup-and-laydown cast used by many for teaching early casters.

    [GH] Mac,

You have made an important point.  Not all casts are best made with an aggressive stop.  The underpowered curve cast is another example.  Many more.

Still remains that for my own tight loop personal best distance casts I do best when I execute as firm a stop as I can muster even when I haul.  Perhaps high speed video would show that my stop isn't as "hard" as I think it is when I try to make it as aggressive as I can.  The use of a Casting analyzer would tell us..... but I haven't done that.

Gets back to Dennis Grant's statement...... IT DEPENDS!
