[GH] Back in mid August, Jim Gill posed a question on what rod manufacturers do to construct rods of different weight designations.
Steve Rajeff is rod designer for G. Loomis. Here is his reply. Well worth the wait :
Hi Gordon,
Was out of the country at a casting competition, and catching up now.
A step up in rod size can be achieved by:
1. Adding more material to stiffen overall rod. (increase wall thickness)
2. Increase stiffness by increasing diameter- starting at a slightly larger point at the tip, and at some point incrementally increase the rate of taper by using new mandrel taper. (no added weight).
3. Combination of both above.(slight increase in weight)- most common method.
4. Use higher modulus(stiffer)material, in part or whole of the blank.- depending on application this can work.
5. Following a deflection test- (compare with known flex), test cast at factory or on local waters, then send out for field test.
6. Repeat with changes as needed.
Hope all is well following the Conclave.
Steve
