    Walter & Group...

[GH]  Midway through sending this message, yesterday, my server went out and was out for many hours.  Some of you received this and many others didn't.  For that reason, I'm sending it again.

    From Ally Gowans :

    Hi Gordy,

Mismatches – great questions and well done to those who answered them. If they want to learn how casting works I recommend that they take a garden cane or something similar and tape 30ft of fly line to the end of it and go false cast on a lawn. Now with relatively little help from the “rod” to smooth things out everything has to be done by the caster. Some people believe this to be is impossible, but it’s not but it’s not easy either! Then the job can be made much easier by adding a rod ring and a tip ring to the cane and using double hauls. Exercises like this help to make real masters, has anyone else got self testing methods?

    Best wishes,

    [GH]   Ally,

I'm in my den at the moment looking at my version of your "cane outfit".  It consists of a plain broom handle to which I've affixed a tip top ring, two center rings, and a tape handle.

I have used it for "self teaching" as well as for demos.

    From Shaun Ash :

We know also have lines that are 5.5 weight which makes things even stranger.
Why has simple grain weight system that is used for sinking lines not
be used across the board, this system has been raised before but never
    caught on.

    [GH]  Shaun,

I suppose that back in '61 the folks at AFTMA felt that condensing ranges of grain weights to single number designations would be simpler for market purposes.

[GH]  At my suggestion, Jim Bass went out and made casts with grossly mismatched tackle.  This is his response :

Gordy I did the casting this morning I will tell you that it is difficult to cast a 000 line on an eight rod.  I had a hard time casting fast enough to get enough line out to try to load the rod. I never did but the thee weight rod cast it better.

I used a four weight rod and a seven weight line to test overline.  I was able to cast this combination without much change to speed and stroke.  I had to slow the speed and increase the stroke and add a haul. The real test is when I was the ten weight line.  I had to increase the stroke slow down and haul.

The thing that came to the front for me is you can cast an overlined rod much more easily than one under lined.  I was able to cast overlined rod much farther than the underlined.

Many times we adjust our cast without even knowing we are changing.  I think I will add this exercise to course here in Keller.  It will give a student a feel for rod loading and adjusting their cast,

I learned that there are more times I would overline than underline.

    # 1. (For the underlined rod )   Increase your speed shorten your stroke reduce your arc.

#2.  (For the overlined rod )  Slow down and make a smooth cast, increase your stroke and arc.
