    Walter & Group...

    Here are some answers to our last haul quiz.  I can't possibly send all of them.  I haver picked a few ones so you can see how the questions have been answered using different word pictures.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    From Lou Bruno . My comments in his answer text prefaced by [GH] :
    [GH]   Let's tackle a couple of new questions :
    1.)   Would you ever use a double haul for a 30' long cast ? No.
    [GH]  There are times when I would use a haul with a very short cast.  See my comments to 2.)
    2.)   If you answered "yes", tell us the circumstances which would lead you to do that.
    [GH]    1.)  To increase line (loop) speed when casting into a very strong wind.
                2.)  When I want to forcefully "drill" my fly into the water.
                        a.  When trying to make a splash next to cover to entice a black bass.
                        b.  Rarely when placing a fly accurately into a small clear area between floating weeds in the salt.
                 3.)  When teaching the concept of,  SHORT CAST / SHORT HAUL  - LONG CAST / LONG HAUL.  (Exaggeration to make a point.)
    3.)  What is a CHECK HAUL ?  Pulling back or stopping the unrolling fly line after loop formation.
    4.)  For what purpose would you use it?  When casting to a specific target. If you need to abruptly stop the unrolling fly line in case of an emergency.
    [GH]  When timed correctly ( A brief haul made just before the unrolling loop gets to the leader connection) this check haul can assist achieving rapid leader turnover when desired.  Particularly useful when making presentations with long leaders and large/heavy flies.
    5.)  What is a TRIPLE HAUL? Performing three hauls within the casting stroke.
    [GH]   I use Jason Borger's terminology.  Basically, that the "triple haul" is a double haul made during the cast followed by a check haul (made after loop formation) *
    6.)  I've just given you a magic fly rod. It is a 9' # 8.   This one gets shorter and shorter as you make many casts.  You are using a wt. forward floating fly line which matches the rod designation.
    You need to reach a target 85' from you using a straight line overhead cast with a double haul.
    Do you change your haul as your rod gets progressively shorter ? Yes.
    7.)  How ? A longer haul.
    8.)  Why ? With the shorter rod you have to lengthen the casting stroke (short stroke – short haul; long stroke – long haul) and change the timing in order to move the rod tip faster over a greater distance to generate greater acceleration.
    [GH]   Yes.  I'd also make a faster haul.
    9.)  When, relative to the casting stroke to you STOP your line hand when making a haul while false casting? On the forward cast and back cast when the fly line generates the greatest tension, which is when the fly line completely straightens or just prior to changing the casting stroke direction.
    [GH]  Well that would entail continuing the haul well beyond loop formation.  As Aitor Coteron correctly noted, yesterday, that would not be a good idea.
    Without having studied this with high speed video, I'm reasonably sure that I get best results when I stop my haul hand a fraction of a second after the "stop" of my casting hand.  That would place it just a bit after the start of loop formation (just after RSP (Rod straight position)
    10.)  When, in relation to your delivery casting stroke do you RELEASE your line from your line hand ? I don’t, I maintain contact with the fly line upon my release by forming a “circle” with my thumb and index finger.
    [GH]  Nothing wrong with that technique.  I learned it from Lefty Kreh years ago.  However, when I do that I have actually released the fly line from my thumb/finger pinch into that "circle" so it can shoot through as though my hand "circle" were a stripper guide. **
    I'm pretty sure I make that release (with or without the hand "circle") just after the "stop" of my casting hand.
    Ten Haul Questions:
    1.)   Would you ever use a double haul for a 30' long cast?
                    Yes
    2.)   If you answered "yes", tell us the circumstances which would lead you to do that.
    To tighten the loop and/or increase line speed.  At 30’ it would usefully help casts with a particularly long leader and particularly short fly line carry.  It could also be used to quickly pick up and reposition the fly on the water to intercept a moving fish.
    3.)  What is a CHECK HAUL?
                    A “pull back” to stop the line’s progress before the cast line lands on the water.
    4.)  For what purpose would you use it?
    Typically to snap the fly down to the water surface before it can be blown off target by a strong wind. It can also be used  to shorten an otherwise too long cast.
    5.     What is a TRIPLE HAUL?
    A double haul followed by a check haul.
    6.)  I've just given you a magic fly rod. It is a 9' # 8.   This one gets shorter and shorter as you make many casts.  You are using a wt. forward floating fly line which matches the rod designation. You need to reach a target 85' from you using a straight line overhead cast with a double haul. Do you change your haul as your rod gets progressively shorter?
                    Yes
    7.)  How?
                    Haul faster
    8.)  Why?
    The shorter the rod, the less rod tip travel distance during casting strokes of equal duration and arc. Since distance travelled over time is speed, the shorter rod will generate less tip, and thus line, speed.  The difference in rod generated line speed can be made up with increased haul speed.
    9.)  When, relative to the casting stroke do you STOP your line hand when making a haul while false casting?
                    After RSP.
    10.)  When, in relation to your delivery casting stroke do you RELEASE your line from your line hand?
    To maintain line control, line typically flows between the thumb and index finger without being released from the hand entirely. The exception is casts for maximum distance where the line would be released at the completion of the haul.
    [GH]   Let's tackle a couple of new questions :
    1.)   Would you ever use a double haul for a 30' long cast ? Yes
    2.)   If you answered "yes", tell us the circumstances which would lead you to do that. To cast into a strong headwind. To turn over a long leader.
    3.)  What is a CHECK HAUL ? A pull on the line to increase rod leg tension in an unrolling loop.
    4.)  For what purpose would you use it ? To turn over a leader more positively or when a target might otherwise be overshot.
    5.)  What is a TRIPLE HAUL ? A check haul applied to a double hauled presentation cast.
    6.)  I've just given you a magic fly rod. It is a 9' # 8.   This one gets shorter and shorter as you make many casts.  You are using a wt. forward floating fly line which matches the rod designation.
    You need to reach a target 85' from you using a straight line overhead cast with a double haul.
    Do you change your haul as your rod gets progressively shorter ? Yes.
    7.)  How ? Make it longer or faster or both.
    8.)  Why ? To compensate for the reduced available tip speed from rotation.
    9.)  When, relative to the casting stroke to you STOP your line hand when making a haul while false casting ? Concurrent with, or slightly later than, the stop of the rod hand.
    10.)  When, in relation to your delivery casting stroke do you RELEASE your line from your line hand ?  Immediately after the loop has formed.
