    Walter & Group...

    From Gary Eaton :

     FOUND on Marshall Cutchin's Midcurrent website -

    According to actress Amber Heard's Web site (believe it or not, it's called "Adoring Amber Heard"), "The River Why," the new Matthew Leuwyler movie based on the David James Duncan novel, will premiere at the Dallas Film Festival April 8-18. "Directed by Matthew Leutwyler, The River Why is a drama based on the novel by David James Duncan about a man known as 'the Mozart of fly fishing' who leaves his big city home in rebellion from his family. In the process he comes in contact with an assortment of eccentric characters who help him in his journey to adulthood. The film stars Zach Gilford, Amber Heard, William Hurt, Kathleen Quinlan and William Devane."

    The movie has been in production for some time, with a court case and drawn-out funding search slowing the process. But even a small crossover audience could provide a nice spring bump to the sport's retailers and outfitters.

    We're hoping.

    I frequently tell people to "expand your fly fishing soul by reading David James Duncan's, The River Why. If you have read it, read it again. It will get your mind right on a very deep level." -

    Gary....

    Thanks.  I have not read the book ...... but I will.

    Obviously nothing to do with the real River Wye between England and Wales.  (For which the "Wye Cast".... a change of direction on the back cast maneuver) was named.

    Years ago, Marshall Cutchin started guiding at Key West.  He very quickly became one of the best skiff guides in the area.  One of his accomplishments was the design of a very effective Permit fly... sort of a crab shaped muddler with rubber legs.  The most important aspect of that fly, was that it was balanced to act like a crab as it sank in the water column on the flat.

                                                     CHANGE OF DIRECTION CASTS

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    QUIZ :
    1. List as many change of direction cast as you can.  ( At least 6. )
    2. Give a brief description of each.
    3. A new caster changes direction from a downstream layout to a 45 degree across stream presentation.  How is he likely to accomplish this ?
    4. What (if any) are the disadvantages of doing it this way ?
    5. You wish to change direction after your weighted fly and sink-tip line have sunk downstream 50' from you to a depth of about 4'.  How do you do that ?
    6. You are wading a bonefish flat.  Your presentation at 35' has resulted in a spooked fish.  You turn and see that a bonefish is approaching from behind at only 20'.  Now you need a 180 degree change of direction cast while doing your best not to spook this fish.  What do you do ?
    7. When roll casting with your right casting arm, you tried to change direction 30 degrees to the right, but ended up with a tangle.  Why ?
    8.  After undoing the tangled mess, you try again.  This time, you were successful.  What did you do ?
    9.  Now you made a roll cast over your right shoulder with a change of direction to your left.  Worked fine. How is it that you were able to do that with no line collision or tangle ?
    10. Your student makes a presentation at 60' while using a 9' single handed rod and floating WF line.  He tries to pick up line for a change of direction cast but cannot do it.  How do you teach him to make this work ?
    11. What is the basic difference between a SWITCH CAST and a SINGLE SPEY CAST ?
