    Walter & Group...

    From Walter Simberski:

    Hi Gordy

I'm surprised no body has mentioned the Airflo Sixth Sense Sweep line yet:

Designed to do exactly the opposite of uniform sink lines.

    Thanks

Walter...    This line is the antisthesis of the uniform sink line !

I contacted Tim Rajeff and asked him about it. I also asked him about the new core materials in the Airflo prototype lines which I've been testing.     Below is his reply :-

    Gordy,

Sorry I haven?t stayed on top of your email chain regarding silk fly line and Spey lines. It has been the busiest Aug on record for Rajeff Sports so I have been unable to contribute to your activities.

The Airflo Sweep is a simple design where by not using density compensation you purposely get a big belly in the line. This allows your fly to sweep through a large swath of water depths during a single retrieve. My friends at Airflo that fish in tournaments use these lines when they want to show the fish a non level retrieve and when they want o explore many strata in the least amount of time. With a level line or density compensation your line will tend to sink ?level? and allow you to keep your fly at a select depth during the retrieve.

In the past 2 years Airflo has switched all but a hand full of lines to their low stretch (6%) braid core. Most trout lines have about 16% stretch. Airflo uses a propriety braid that I think is mostly made up of polyester.  This core sure helps detect takes and help set the hook. It also helps Airflo lower line memory. This year we have a softer material that casts like butter and is a great line for most fishing. It is not a good ?parking lot? line because of the extreme heat the line is exposed to and the tendency for softer materials to compress in the guides adding a lot of friction during the double haul.

If there is anything I can do for you please let me know.

    Many thanks,

    Tim

    Gordy,

Can you recommend a good book or DVD for tying spey flies?

Flies for most Spey casting are designed on the basis of the fishery.... in other words, for various species.

I have used the same flies when fishing Salmon and Steelhead whether I'm using a Spey outfit or a single handed one.

Rick Whorwood (as you probably know) is a World class fly tyer, especially known for his classic salmon flies.  One of these was actually chosen by the Canadian Government to be depicted on a national postage stamp.  He'll know a great deal more than I do on this subject ..... so I CC'd him with this message.

    Hi Gordy
Likely the best book on Spey Flies, would be Bob Veverka's Spey Flies And How To Tie Them.
also he might want to learn how to tie tube flies, they are more popular then actual spey flies. I don't know of any book on tubes. Sorry ! He could google guideline angling products they carry a lot of tube flies, I'm sure they would have books on the subject. If he wants to talk to me about them my # is 905-662-8999

    Rick...

Thanks !  Brings back memories of what I thought was the ugliest salmon fly ever.  This was a 5" long treble hook tube fly tied with black bear hair and called the "sun ray shadow".  For some unexplained reason, it was the only fly which took fish during a trip I made Atlantic salmon fishing on the Laerdal River in Norway a few years ago.
