Walter & Group....
From Dave Leger :
Gordy,
I’m
one of about 15 CIs that teach 15 minute free casting lessons to the public at
the Chicago fly show and the Minn. Fly show for John Breslin. Typically we will
do 350 to 400 lessons a weekend. For me being a new CI (several years) this
teaching opportunity has been outstanding. For us non-guide or non-in-the
“business” CIs it’s hard to get that kind of teaching experience
anywhere.
So
to the point, I believe that Macauley is correct when he suggests that for most
people at the beginner level or who just want to fish, we may be taking the long
way around so to speak by using or integrating the conceptual with the hands on.
I, we show instructors with primarily a kinesthetic approach get most
folks making nice loops with a lay down, easily in 5 to 10 minutes with very
little “casting mechanics” being discussed, and double-hauling in one lesson if
they have even a modest casting background. It really is the most bang for
the buck way, relative to the amount of time spent, I
think.
With
that said though I believe we as teachers must have the in-depth knowledge that
the FFF program requires to make any method work well, Macauley’s or the more
traditional ones. Fortunately, most students aren’t in a race to progress and
can be developed at a more relaxed pace with one or by using components of
several different approaches that best suit the students
needs.
The
only absolute is that there are no absolutes.

From Al Crise:
Howdy Gordy
At Gulf Coast Conclave I
had the great privilege of talking to Stu Apte. He and I lived in the same area
of the Keys.
we talked about some of the
Keys we had fished people we knew and such. I picked up his new Book of "Wind
and Tides" I found it full of really interesting stuff about Stu and his life.
form child hood in Miami. threw flight school and Fishing some of the great
places. If you are a pilot you will enjoy this one. If you are Fly fisher you to
will find it a good read.
On Macauley Lord's
"DI" I have use that, with what I call the "WHY". Not just do it
this way. but I also include the why this or that works or does not. This I
think gives some depth to the learning. Boy Scouts I will skip some of the 'why'
to keep the boys learning and making the moves required. That afternoon they
will be fishing. Next lesson will have more of the 'why'. I do show or tell them
that "the loop did such and such because..." So the they can correct the problem
when seen.
I do try to stay from:
"Just do it my way". For: "This might help you". Many have a need for the
"Numbers" "Parts and pieces" of the cast. Or maybe the Rhythm of the cast.
"Music, Rhythm and Learning the
Doublehaul" by
J.Friesenhahn.
Each student is different
each student has to have time alone, after a new task is shown, to find how many
'zummies' it will take them to make it happen. Show, let them try, show
them again, Tell them why.

direct."

From Mark
Milkovitch:
Gordy,
I wasn’t able to get a
very complete idea of how a “Direct Instruction” casting lesson would
proceed. Is there a DVD or an article that would illustrate the method?
Also, I’ve looked in the FFF website for a glossary which covers the casting
terms like “drag” and “slide loading” we’ve been discussing. Am I just missing
it? I gather that the glossary committee might be developing one. If it’s
not on the website, is there a discussion draft available?
Thanks,
Mark Milkovich

Mark...
No DVD or instructional that I'm aware of. I thought the article pretty
well explained the concept though it wasn't intended to go into the details of
each instructional move.
We are
working on that very glossary now. Takes a long time
!
While not
strict definitions, I have tried to send some word descriptions of these terms
during the past two weeks. Problem is that not all agree on each of
these descriptions.... nothing "official" as
yet.

ANALYSIS
BY ALLY GOWANS:
Hi
Gordy,
In the pictures the
caster is using “translation” throughout his cast, rotation is added to body
translation to produce the total linear velocity.
Best wishes,
Ally
