As you know, I like the idea of showing good answers from several members.  I do this so that we can all see various ways of describing and viewing these things.  With this in mind : -

New questions to finish up on our discussion of MENDS :

    1.) Define an on-the-water mend.

Repositioning the line by moving the rod tip, as the line lays on the water.

2.) What is a VERTICAL HUMP MEND ?

After RSP, a vertical movement of the rod tip to produce a wave in the line that goes up and down.

3.) When would you use it when fishing a stream ?

Hump mends are for straight line casts that require  slack to create the desired drift.

    4.) Is it performed on-the-water or in-the-air ?

Both; Arial- to place slack further down the line towards the fly.

Water- to produce slack at the rod tip, and draw out line from the line hand.

5.) Briefly describe a REACH MEND.

Forward cast to target, as loop unrolls to target follow the line down to the waters level with a smooth sweep of the rod to a 90 degree angle between the target, rod tip and caster.

6.) One author described a PARACHUTE MEND in text.  Who is that ?  Cite your reference.

Gary Borger, FISHING FLOATING FLIES, Tomorrow River Press. (googled)

    I'll add: pp. 229, 230.   Gordy

    7.) Brieflly describe it.

Forward cast at horizon and after stop, draw rod tip back to vertical and then follow the line down to the water to create slack on a down stream cast.

    8.) What is a STACK MEND ?

Feeding extra slack in to the line by moving the rod tip up and down while the line is on the water.

9.) When would you use it when fishing ?

Down stream casts,  putting slack in to the line of current to keep the fly drag free, or to keep a sinking fly from rising under tension.

10.) Would you ever make an on-the-water DOWNSTREAM MEND ?

To create drag that can speed up the fly.  To reposition the fly’s path.  To change a fishes direction of travel.  To dislodge a snagged hook.

If the boat is going faster than the fly.

    11.)  When ?

    See #10

12.) Briefly describe a PUDDLE MEND.

13.) For what is it used ?

14.) For making mends, which is more efficient...  A short rod or a long one ?

    Long

    15.) Why ?

Tip to fulcrum is greater allowing greater reach.

16.) Would you ever add a CURVE MEND to a REACH MEND ?

    Yes

    17.) For what reason ?

To create a greater drag free drift.

18.) You are trying to place an aerial mend to counter a tongue of fast current 40" out on the river.  What do you do with your line hand after your loop has formed ?

    Shoot line

19.) Back in the 1930's & 40's, there were very few salt water fly fishermen. Some of them fishing NE waters, use the term MEND to mean something very different from our present meaning.  Do you know what that was ?

20.)  Would you ever make two aerial mends after your cast ?

    Yes

    21.)  For what purpose ?

For example; Combine aerial hump mend with reach to get drag free drift around rock.

Thanks for keeping us ‘in the loop’

Question:   What is an "IDEAL" loop ???

Let's have short answers.  Separate "long answers" only when and if needed.
